It’s a big week here at MOPC with two of our favorite holidays; Election Day and Cardinals (and Royals) Opening Day! While we hope this newsletter greets you well, we are closed today celebrating some wins from this Tuesday and hopefully more today.

Let’s review all the election happenings from this week!

Tuesday was Election Day all across the state. School board races were hot and there were plenty of ballot measures to go around, however, voter turnout was low. Turnout for St. Louis County was 19.1%. In St. Louis City it sat at 10.4%. Kansas City turnout was just under 7%.

While voting in Municipal Elections may not be as sexy as voting for President, it is just as important. Local elected officials and ballot measures impact our lives much more directly and in very tangible ways. Below are links to each election authority where you can find your sample ballots as elections come up and other additional resources:

Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners

St. Louis City Board of Election Commissioners

St. Louis County Board of Elections

Only two issues appeared on the ballots of St. Louis City residents Tuesday; Proposition 1, a bond issue for infrastructure repairs and improvements for which MOPC had the pleasure of running the campaign, and Proposition R which turns over the redistricting process to a citizen commission. Both propositions passed with Proposition 1 receiving 84.40% approval and Proposition R receiving 69.16% approval. We are looking forward to seeing the increased accountability that Proposition R will bring to the Board of Aldermen and how the increase in funds that Proposition 1 will help support infrastructure and rebuild our city.

On the Kansas City side, there were three main ballot measures; Question 1, a bond issue to generate funds for the city’s sanitary sewer system, Question 2 to renew the property tax levy, and Question 3 to remove vacant land. All three questions passed with approval percentages in the 70s.

St. Louis County held an array of school board races where results were mixed throughout the County with progressives winning toward the north and conservatives winning toward the west. St. Louis County also had four propositions appear on the ballot with mixed results.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Election Day started out dreary with rain in St. Louis in the morning but by the afternoon it was clear skies and 70 degrees! Mayor Jones and Treasurer Layne took advantage of Election Day to meet voters at several different polling locations across the city.

ALL I DO IS WIN

This week, Paula got to add her long-time legislative priority of getting lead out of school drinking water as an amendment to another piece of legislation. She also had the opportunity to read it on the House Floor! She is one step closer to making this legislation that she introduced in a different form last year a reality for our kids.

Paula continues to put kids first in her legislation and we are so excited for her to continue this work!

START SPREADING THE NEWS

We had a great group of volunteers that came out on Tuesday to spread the word about Trish to voters as they were exiting the polls and received quite a bit of positive feedback but we are far from done. We will be hosting two voter contact opportunities this Saturday, April 9.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. we will be launching a canvass from UFCW Local 655 located at 300 Weidman Rd, Ballwin, MO 63011. Click the link below to RSVP.

We will also be hosting a phone bank on Saturday, April 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. CST. Click the link below to sign up for this phone bank that can be done from the comfort of your home!

HOW TIME FLIES

Yesterday marked the one-year elect-iversary of Tishaura O. Jones as Mayor of the City of St. Louis. We are so proud of her leadership of the City of St. Louis and can’t wait to see what else lies ahead.

The Mayor’s Office has created a survey to receive feedback from residents regarding how they would like to see American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds spent. Click the link below to give the city input on your priorities for this funding.
